Understanding the gold price today

The number most people mean by “the gold price” is the spot price: what one troy ounce of unallocated, 24-karat (fine) gold trades for right now in the wholesale market. It moves throughout the trading day based on the US dollar, real interest rates, central-bank buying, and safety-driven demand during periods of geopolitical or financial stress. It is not the price you pay at a jewellery counter, which adds a making charge, dealer premium and sometimes tax on top.
